Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy offers compassionate, gently paced support for the effects of distressing or overwhelming experiences. These experiences may arise from a single event, ongoing stress, neglect, loss or relational harm. Therapy provides space to understand how these experiences have affected you and to work towards greater safety, connection and trust in yourself.

When Trauma Therapy May Be Helpful

Trauma can influence how you feel, relate to others and respond to the world around you. You may notice changes in your emotions, relationships, sense of safety or ability to feel present and connected. At other times, you may simply recognise that a past or ongoing experience continues to affect your life.

There is no single way that trauma presents. Your responses are shaped by your experiences, circumstances and the ways your mind and body learnt to protect you during difficult or overwhelming situations.

What Trauma Therapy Can Offer

Trauma therapy can help you understand these responses with greater compassion and develop ways of feeling more grounded when distress arises. Over time, the work may support emotional regulation, a greater sense of choice and a renewed connection with yourself and others.

The process is collaborative and shaped by your individual needs. You will not be expected to disclose every detail of an experience before you feel ready. Therapy can move at a manageable pace, with attention to what feels tolerable and supportive for you.

A Body-Aware and Integrative Approach

Trauma can affect both psychological wellbeing and the body’s responses to perceived threat. This may be reflected in changes in tension, breathing, energy, alertness or connection with physical sensations.

A body-aware approach may include grounding, breath, gentle movement, mindful awareness and noticing physical sensations. EMDR-informed techniques, including bilateral stimulation, may also be incorporated where appropriate. These approaches are used alongside emotional reflection to support regulation, help you remain connected to the present and facilitate the processing of difficult experiences at a manageable pace.

Healing from trauma does not mean erasing or forgetting the past. It may involve developing a different relationship with what happened, recognising the ways you adapted and gradually rebuilding a sense of safety, agency and connection in the present.
